Veterans Day’s roots stretch back to the armistice that ended World War I. On November 11, 1918, hostilities ceased on the Western Front, silencing the guns at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” A year later, Armistice Day was first celebrated, dedicated to honoring the veterans of that great conflict.
But America’s history soon called more to defend freedom. After the sacrifices of World War II and the Korean War, Congress spurred on by veterans’ groups expanded the holiday’s scope. In 1954, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a time to honor all American veterans, past and present, regardless of which war or conflict they served in.
